Florida's response to measles outbreak

In mid-February, a measles outbreak started at Manatee Bay Elementary School in Broward County, South Florida. It has spread to at least nine cases in Broward County and one in Polk County, Central Florida.

Florida's response has drawn criticism from public health experts. Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo has not advised parents of unvaccinated children to vaccinate or quarantine them. He left the decision to parents in a Feb. 20 letter.

Dr. Ali Khan from the University of Nebraska is concerned, as this goes against standard public health practices. Such actions can undermine confidence in public health measures like vaccination.

Measles is highly contagious, with a transmission rate of up to 90% among unvaccinated individuals. Around 8% of kindergartners in Broward County are not vaccinated for measles, posing a risk of widespread illness.
